AN ACT TO INCREASE THE PUNISHMENT FOR ALTERING, DESTROYING, OR REMOVING PERMANENT PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION MARKS FROM PERSONAL PROPERTY AND REMOVING, DEFACING, DESTROYING, ALTERING, OR COVERING OVER IDENTIFYING MARKS ON CERTAIN MACHINERY, EQUIPMENT, AND APPARATUSES.

Bill summary

Senate committee substitute to the 2nd edition makes the following changes.

Revises the proposed changes to the punishment for violations of GS 14-160.1 (Alteration, destruction or removal of permanent identification marks from personal property). Now makes it a (1) Class 1 misdemeanor if the personal property was valued at not more than $1,000 (was, at less than $1,000) at the time of the offense or (2) a Class H felony if the personal property was valued at more than $1,000 (was, at $1,000 or more) at the time of the offense.

Revises the proposed changes to the punishment for violations of GS 14-401.4 (Identifying marks on machines and apparatus; application to Division of Motor Vehicles for numbers). Now makes it a Class H felony for violations where the machine or other apparatus was valued at more than $1,000 (was, $1,000 or more) at the time of the offense.
